The short is currently in post production with a premiere expected in Glasgow this autumn. The short, written and directed by Johnny Herbin, will then feature at a number of film festivals throughout the UK in 2012.

June Hazel has signed on to appear in "Mugging For Amateurs". The actress has recently completed work on stage in "The Vagina Monologues" and the film "Declarations".
Hazel's character in "Mugging For Amateurs" is currently under wraps but she joins a cast that already includes Calum MacAskill and Scott Denny.
"Mugging For Amateurs" is written and directed by Johnny Herbin. The short is being filmed in Glasgow.

Carter Starts 'Own Little World'

Chris Carter is currently developing an animated short film alongside director Tom Kelly called "Own Little World". Carter is serving as a story writer, conceptual artist and designer amongst other roles on the production.

This week the music video for "Colleen" was unexpectedly removed from YouTube as requested by (presumably) the new copyright holders of the song "Just Isn't Music Ltd.".
We're looking into the motivation behind the banning and in the meantime you can still find it on all other good video hosting sites.
The video was originally made for Radar Films and is directed by Johnny Herbin and stars Ruth Callandar, Scott Denny and Craig Hunter. It has been online for 3 years and has amassed over 239,751 hits.

Pre-production on the first short film from New Retro has begun. A script for the project has been in development over the past couple of months and casting is also under way. After making six music videos Johnny Herbin is directing on a shoot expected to start this Autumn. Further details including cast and crew will be revealed soon.

I was building the video slowly in the spare time I had to myself when not at work or with friends. There's a large bulk of production photos and some fun footage that would probably just end up scrapped so I've decided to make a quick little edit to show this stuff all in one place.

Ryan Meloy on "I Am Stop. You Are Go."

This past weekend The Sunday Times caught up with Call Me Ishmael frontman Ryan Meloy to discuss the band and the new music video. Below is an excerpt:

"It's alot of hard work being in a band," says lead singer Ryan Meloy. "When you tell people you're in a band, I think they think it's just for fun, a bit of larking about and getting drunk. A lot of bands we know are like that, but we've put a lot of effort into advertising ourselves..."
...Next they plan to release a video that is as far from the typical low-budget band video as it's possible to imagine. Meloy, who studied cinema at the University of the West of Scotland enlisted the help of Johnny Herbin to come up with a story to fit with the lead track on the band's forthcoming EP, I Am Stop, You Are Go.
"From the get-go we wanted to be different, to offer something different," says Meloy. "I think our music is different for a start-it's more cinematic-we don't just sound like a band trying to be the next Biffy Clyro.
"But even something like making a video has to be done right. We didn't want to be like every other band and just play to a screen."

In the video, a little girl draws an octopus and a cat that come alive, grow to the size of Godzilla and escape from the book. As Glasgow is trampled to dust in the background, Call Me Ismael rock on. It is an impressive piece of animation by any standards.

"...it looks pretty amazing," says Meloy. "It's a better quality video than some of the ones I see by bands much bigger than us."

The video has been out for just under a week and after a solid performance online it will feature at a number of film festivals this summer. The band played a special gig to celebrate the video launch in The Captain's Rest on Monday and the posters can be spotted all over town (pictured above in Missing). There are tentative plans to launch the video on various digital music video channels but nothing firm can be announced just yet.

Featured on Jim Gellatly and Vic Galloway, the band are an unsigned Glasgow act currently blazing a trail with live performances headlining King Tuts and supporting the likes of Temper Trap and Jocasta Sleeps.

We're a little late on this one but February saw the directorial debut from New Retro regular Chris Carter. Since appearing in "Dragon" (2006) and shooting "Easy Come, Easy Go" (2008) Chris relocated to Bournemouth to study animation. Carter's first animated short "Godzilla Vs Global Warming" is a collaboration with his fellow animation students. It's been on YouTube a few weeks now but you can watch it below!

The flow of photos from the new music video continues today with the first shot of Chris Carter ('Dragon').

The new video combines live action and animation to illustrate an attack on Glasgow city centre by a gigantic cartoon octopus. Doffing it's cap to blockbusters like 'Transformers','Godzilla','The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms' and 'The Host', the music video will aspire to show a creature lay waste to the 'city of culture 1990' only by the means of a shoe string budget. Scott Denny and Chris Carter are set to star with Johnny Herbin directing.

An unsigned Glasgow band have approved use of one of their tracks and will also feature in the video.

The track will be revealed exclusively on the New Retro Fan Facebook page very soon.

It's been a while but as promised some more exclusive content is being added to the Facebook Fan page.

The first 'Making of' blog from 2007's Bolt Action Five - 'Tree Friend, Tree Foe' will be going online today. The video was one of two blogs originally released on BEBO for a limited time in the lead up to the music video going online. It was shot entirely (spare for a couple of shots from the previous two videos) on Johnny's mobile phone so the picture and sound is awful. Despite this the blog remains a fun little feature and will be a permanent addition to the Facebook Fan page.

In the first episode Daniel Boroujerdi takes a trip down to Ayr beach to shoot the video's wet climax.

We're happy to announce that the sixth music video from New Retro is currently in pre-production. It will follow a similar tone to previous videos but on a much larger scale, blending live action with 2D animation. An unsigned Glasgow band has approved use of one of their tracks and will also possibly feature in the video.

Scott Denny and Chris Carter will return in small roles after their turns in "Sex Lines Are Expensive Comedy" and "Dragon" with Johnny Herbin directing.

Due to the use of animation Video Numero Sei will have a longer production period than previous videos and a December finish date will be most likely.

www.newretro.blogspot.com will be running features on the new video right up to the online release whilst the track itself will be revealed on the Facebook page first.

Johnny is now looking for local voice talents to help work on his current animated project. Unfortunately any positions will be unpaid but will provide aspiring voice artists an excellent piece of work for their portfolio. The roles are all suited to british/scottish accents and any applicants must be at least 18 years old and live in the Glasgow area.

Hi ... welcome back.

There's not been any updates on the blog recently because we've all been busy with other projects(read: university, work and various paying jobs).

So what's been happening?

New Retros official site will soon be moving to a new address. Not sure if there's going to be a new 'look' yet or not but the aim is to rejuvenate the ...'thing'.

Johnny's done scripting a new summer project (that's not 'S+B') which is hopefully going to emerge as a pilot for a six part children's television series. More news on that as it develops.

"Sex Lines Are Expensive Comedy" was originally released in 2006 and was made by Scott Denny, Chris Carter and Johnny Herbin. It was shown at the Co-Operative Young Film Makers Festival 2006 and won silver standard at The IAC British International Amateur Film Festival.

Update! Sixth Music Video?

Hey!
It's been too long. We've been away for months but are finally looking at bringing some new work online in time for the end of the year. So why so quiet for this long? Well to start off we've all moved into new homes. That in itself was pretty time consuming.
Chris Carter is now living in England but will undoubtably continue to contribute to future projects. He's had his hands full promoting the new X-Files movie this summer too. Scott Denny got engaged last month and has been very busy refurbishing his new house with Pam and Julia (who had her first birthday last month!). Johnny Herbin has been doing a work placement at 55Degrees in Glasgow so hasn't had the time to consider any other projects. Until now...

Talks have begun with a number of local bands for a potential sixth music video. Apologies for being so vague about things but cards are being played pretty close to chests at the moment. Hopefully we'll have a confirmation and announcement for people before the end of the month.

New Retro Winter-Spring 2008 Prospectus

The plan for 2008 is to continue with a number of projects from 2007 while also developing new material.

January kicked off with post-production on the 5th music video, "Easy Come, Easy Go" for local Glasgow band, The Down and Outs. This will most likely continue into February when the video will premiere online at the regular YouTube New Retro page (find it here: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=broadcastnewretro).

March will bring the animated project "The Polar Invasion" back out of hiatus, with Johnny aiming for a complete overhaul of the script and story, essentially starting from scratch all over again. All of the models were accidently destroyed during the summer last year and will need to be rebuilt. Ashley Good is still attached to narrate the short film. A release date will be announced during post-production.

On April 14th New Retro's first music video "Sex Lines Are Expensive Comedy" will have been online for two years. To celebrate this ,we are considering releasing a high quality version onto YouTube. Providing there is still demand, this will be more than likely.

May has been tentatively set aside for two possible short films intended as entries for various winter UK film festivals.

A sixth music video is also being carefully considered.

"The editing was completed back in December. Everything was halted over the Christmas and New Year period but I'm back at work on some of the effects for the video. The animation is making very slow progress but I am confident 'Easy Come, Easy Go' will be on YouTube by the end of February. " - Johnny

The Down and Outs for Video Numero Cinque

As Colleen charged it's way onto YouTube last week (many thanks to all who watched, rated and favourited it - your consideration was appreciated and helped 'Colleen' become the UKs' Number 1 Top Rated Music Video!) Johnny and Chris ventured to Ibrox where they shot video number 5 with a local band.

The band in question are The Down and Outs.

Described as "A mix between 60s beat groups (Kinks, Beatles), The Smiths and The Buzzcocks.", The Down and Outs are tipped for big things in 2008 and are regularly played on XFM Scotland (where previous video band Drive-By Argument are also firm favourites).

Johnny is currently editing the video for 'Easy Come, Easy Go' with an aim to start principle animation on the project for Tuesday. The animation process itself is expected to take a good while to render, with every single frame of the video needing to be digitally altered to achieve the desired effect.

On December 1st the brand new video from New Retro hits YouTube.

The track to the video is 'Colleen' by 'The Heavy'. The 4th video by Johnny Herbin stars Ruth Callander and Craig Hunter. Previous video stars Scott Denny and Chris Carter also feature in smaller roles.
"Colleen" was made as an entry to the Radar Festival 2007 but unfortunately did not qualify for the finals.
Although dissapointed with "Colleen"'s performance with the judges at Radar, we are hoping that it will find a receptive audience online where our other videos have been so readily embraced.

In other news Johnny will be shooting "Video Numero Cinque" this Wednesday with a local Glasgow band. The plans are for something entirely different to videos 1-4 both visually and structurally. Along with the band's input the result will hopefully be something very special.

Video Numero Quattro

After what seems an age of nothing we have got some good news and some bad news.
The good news is last week we shot a brand spanking new video as an entry for The Radar Festival 2008. We're very happy with it with Chris even declaring that it's the "best yet" and his new favourite.

The bad news is you can't see it. Yet. As the video was made for The Radar Film Festival there are a number of rules we need to play by. One of these rules is that the video is not to be made publicly viewable until the judges deem it suitable to do so. So unfortunately we don't have a 'release' date as of yet. Christmas does seem a likelihood however. Rest assured as we will be posting screen shots and photos from behind the scenes exclusively here as well as other details over the coming weeks leading to the inevitable release. The 4th video is similar in tone and structure to our previous efforts, "Dragon" in particular.

For those wondering what happened to the video announced back in June involving an unsigned band: It IS still happening. The band are currently looking for a gap in their schedule for a two day shoot.

First Look at "The Polar Invasion"!

The film's production is currently on hiatus as Chris and Johnny are both away on holiday this month. In July all of the models were accidently destroyed and will be re-made in September so Johnny, Chris and Scott can look at continuing the shoot.

Some happy news for all as Scott has recently become father to a baby girl! Julia Morag Denny was born June 21st 2007 to happy parents Pam and Scott.

Scott played the guy running from the jumper in "Sex Lines Are Expensive Comedy", formed half of the shooting crew for "Dragon" and also played the mugger in "Tree Friend Tree Foe".

Discussions regarding a fourth music video have been rather muted for the past couple of months due to exams and work on "The Polar Invasion". As "Invasion" is on hiatus Johnny has decided to begin work on a new music promo. Both the music and ideas are very different to the previous videos (a trilogy of torment involving inanimate objects) and this will mark the first time a band actually stars. In addition to this members of the band are making major contributions to the thought process. The band and song in question will be announced here first as soon as post production begins.

Ashley Good Narrates The Invasion

Ashley Good will be lending his vocal talents to narrate the animated short 'The Polar Invasion'. Good attends the same University as Johnny and the two worked together along with Scott and Chris on a music video project in 2005.
At the moment we have put the production on halt to focus on the demands of university and work.

The Second "Polar Invasion" Poster and Production Update!

Following on from last weeks' artwork, here is the second poster for "The Polar Invasion". The poster reveals one of the main polar bear characters, 'Lumpy'.
'Lumpy' is one of 20 models made for the film. Joining Johnny, Scott and Chris in sculpting characters for the film have been Pamela Anderson, Miriam Armstrong and Sarah Greener, each making their own, personalized penguins.
The script for 'The Polar Invasion' is completed and at the moment the focus is on the most demanding aspect of the shoot...the animation. Chris and Scott are currently working on a number of shots to be completed through Flash Animator and Johnny has put together a number of stop-motion shots.

The 3 minute short tells the tale of the effects of Global Warming and how the human race is in for a very rough time.
"The Polar Invasion" will be released on YouTube in June 2007.

The silver award-winning first music video from New Retro was shown in the Jack Cardiff cinema for the BIAFF on Saturday alongside 5 other winners. The music video for Drive-By Argument (http://www.myspace.com/drivebyargument) is now a year old and this has been a fantastic end to what has been a very successful year for the video.

'Sex Lines are Expensive Comedy' was also shown at the Co-operative Young Film-Makers Festival in October 2006.

"Invasion" delayed. (UPDATED)

The release date for The Polar Invasion" has been postponed to May 11th. The extra 10 days will be used for shooting a number of live-action sequences and recording key narration.

!UPDATE!
"Due to the pressures of exam dates and such, we have put the film on hold for the time being. "The Polar Invasion" is still in production and we will look at releasing it in the first couple of weeks of June. An exact date will be posted soon."

The Future

After the success of our previous three videos, New Retro are moving on to several new projects. This month we plan on developing a short video revolving around global warming. Johnny is also in negotiations with one of Glasgows' most promising indie acts, aiming to begin production on a new video during the summer.
We're developing ideas for a short film similar to the work we've done before only bigger, better and more cinematic. So there.
'The Man in the Woods' script has been coming on in leaps and bounds. Since the original drafts it's come a long way. We're genuinely excited about shooting this and can't wait to get a sneak peek out for you people. Unfortunately due to time, uni, exams and money it's hard to put an exact date on when this film is actually going to happen but Johnny has sworn he'll make it before he hits 21. So expect something this September!
